Lewiston Housing and Nonprofit Partner Lewiston Auburn Area Housing Development Corporation Announce New Senior Housing at Former Martel School Site

LEWISTON, Maine – May 23, 2024 – Lewiston Housing, in collaboration with its nonprofit development partner Lewiston Auburn Area Housing Development Corporation (LAAHDC), is proud to announce the upcoming construction of a new senior housing community at the former Martel School location, 860 Lisbon Street, Lewiston. This project, supported by a $5.4 million subsidy from MaineHousing, marks the first phase of a multi-phase development to provide affordable senior housing in Lewiston.

The former Martel School site has already been cleared following its demolition, a step taken in agreement with the City of Lewiston to make way for this significant new development. The project will feature 44 apartment homes designed specifically for senior residents, meeting a crucial need for quality, affordable housing in Lewiston.

Chris Kilmurry, Executive Director of Lewiston Housing Authority, shared his enthusiasm: “We are extremely excited to move forward with this project, which will address the urgent need for senior housing and rejuvenate a key site within our community. This development is a testament to our ongoing commitment to enhance the quality of life for Lewiston’s seniors.”

Construction is scheduled to begin in early 2025, positioning LAAHDC at the forefront of the development efforts. The planned housing complex is expected to be a cornerstone for further community enhancements and a model for future projects to improve housing options in Lewiston.
